Knowing My True Identity

The problem of identity and the definition of psychological bases of its study are relevant not only because the researchers note an identity crisis of a modern man.

Identity is awareness of the personality of their belonging to a particular social and personal position within the social roles and status of the ego. Identity, in terms of the psychosocial approach (Erik Erikson), is a kind of epicenter of every human life cycle. It is developed as a psychological construct during the teen’s years and by its qualitative characteristics depends on the functionality of the individual as an adult in independent life. Identity determines the individual’s ability to assimilate the personal and social experience and maintain their own integrity and subjectivity in the exposure to changes in the external world.

The most difficult is the question of a person’s identity and self-identity. The person may have identity, and may only think and imagine it. However, to be a complete self-identity, a person must have an identity and know what it is. There are several stages of finding and implementing the identity by a person: self-identity, self-actualization and self-transcendence.

Identity can be understood as self-identity, self-discovery and the identification of oneself as a certainty. A person tries to learn, understand and find oneself among the many images that exist in one’s mind and beliefs of other people.

The identity appears as a reflection of the surrounding world, the imitation of external objects. This reflection becomes active, largely conscious and is a way of adaptation to reality. Identity is a modelling; one models oneself and reality in a simplified form to be able to cope with life situations.

One asks oneself and others questions like who am I? To answer them, you need to ask another question: who do I look like? So there is identification, recognition through the comparison of you with others. At first, there is a correlation with something external, something given, something objective, concrete that actually exists next to the person (for example, a child compares it with parents). Then there is a comparison with a certain pattern or an ideal, with something abstract (for example, with a hero or a saint).

Identity is the realization of our belonging to different parts of a large and diverse society. Everybody always tries to influence a person’s identity – at first, parents, then school, politicians or someone else. Most part of our life is devoted to the protection of our identity. It is important to defend it, because identity includes our integrity, continuity, and compliance with ourselves.
