Imprisonment in Mahfouz’s Fountain and Tomb

Naguib Mahfouz is an Egyptian novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988.

The first works of Mahfouz, in which he realistically portrayed the traditional national values, were published in the journal Al-madzhalla Al-Jadida by his editor, a famous Egyptian journalist Salama Musa.

Mahfouz’s first collection of short stories (Whisper of Madness) was published in 1938. It was followed by a series of historical novels written in a romantic style and dedicated to the times of the Pharaohs (Struggle of Thebes, Wisdom of Cheops).

Mahfouz’s prose received European recognition in late 1950 after he published his Cairo trilogy(Bein al-Kasreyn, Qasr al-Shouk, and Al-Sukkariya). In the trilogy, the writer described the life of three generations of a family in Cairo, where he also showed the social and political events in the history of Egypt.

In the 1960s, there were changes in the works of Mahfouz. He began writing small stories, and devotes more space to the symbol. The feeling of constant anxiety and distress caused by the evolution of a society, where people feel more lonely and abandoned, can be seen in Mahfouz’s such works as The Thief and the Dogs, Quail and Autumn, The Way, The chatter over the Nile, Tavern black cats, Honeymoon, etc.

In total, Mahfouz wrote about five dozen novels and stories, and more than a hundred novellas.

In 1988, Mahfouz wrote a short story Fountain and Tomb. In the story, the main character, Saqr Mowazeeni, and his family are imprisoned socially, financially, emotionally and physically. After the death of his father, Mowazeeni is forced to become the head of a big family of unmarried women. The fact that women of the family can’t marry causes on Mowazeeni’s social and financial standing, leading to emotional and physical outcomes.

After graduation from school, Saqr follows his father’s career way and becomes a government official. While working, Saqr managed to keep financial independence for only a year. His father dies and leaves Saqr no inheritance. Sudden death of his father forced Saqr to support all the women in the family. Today, women go to work and earn money to help the family, but during the period, which Naguib Mahfouz depicts in the story, which is early 20th century Egypt, the limitations were placed upon the family by tradition. In addition, the society at that time prohibited women to work.

In the 20th century in Cairo, it was rare to see women working. Women were treated as outlaws. Society found it inappropriate for women to work. A woman from a well-off family, such as the Mowazeeni’s, would be a disgrace for the family because of the society’s believes.
