When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit is a sad story about the crash of childish hopes for peaceful life

When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit is a novel written by Judith Kerr who was German by her background and witnessed the events forerunning World War II. That is why the story is partially autobiographical and depicts the time when Nazi came to power in Germany. One of the central ideas is a dramatic change for a big part of German society as they did not support the regime of Adolf Hitler. A peaceful life of a religious Jewish family made a swing round just because it was too dangerous to stay in their native place any longer.

The plot of the novel is built around a little nine-year-old girl Anna. Her mother, father, brother Max and she lived a life of ease having enough money and time not to care about bread and butter. Anna was a decent schoolgirl enjoying every minute of her adventurous life. Like many other children, she liked tobogganing, toys and playing outside. Her small world was full of childish decisions, passion to studies and beliefs in bright future. She loved her father, who was a reputable editorial writer, her mum, a caring housewife, and was happy to play with Max. Being an ordinary girl, Anna, however, was rather observant to the changes that took place after the elections of 1933. She noticed the cruel behaviour of Nazi children at school but could not realise the approaching danger to a full extent. The feeling of danger alarmed the girl one morning when she found her dad missing. Mother urged the children pack the things and rush out of the home. Since that moment the childish eyes had been forced to see a different world. A touching moment, the consequences of which Anna realised at a later date, was when their mum let them choose only one toy. Though it was a hard choice, the girl took a dog leaving her beloved Pink Rabbit toy behind. The parting with favourite belongings symbolises the farewell to peace. The war is at the door of Europe forcing crowds of people to flee for a refuge. The family found a temporary shelter in Switzerland as soon her father was prosecuted for his anti-Hitler position. With no money for living, the family moved to Paris where dad worked for a Jewish paper opposing the rapid-spreading fascism.

Finally, they came to England to start a new proud and halcyon life. Despite the difficulties, Anna did her best to adjust to new surroundings. However, she was not that naïve and dewy-eyed girl any longer. Moreover, the torments only strengthened Anna due to her strong will and unfading hope for the better.
