Analysis of Twelfth Night Act II, scene III

Oeuvres of great English playwright William Shakespeare coincided with one of the most beautiful pages in the history of European culture – with the Renaissance. It is the period from the XVI to the XVII century in Britain. "Twelfth Night" - one of the best comedies of William Shakespeare. The conflict in the play - the clash of strong feelings of love with adverse circumstances. The comic effect is achieved by depicting various obstacles encountered on the way to the love of the main characters, but these obstacles are illusory. The purpose of this article is a summation and analysis of Act II, scene III of William Shakespeare play "Twelfth Night".

Toby and Andrew enter at the beginning of Act 2 Scene 3. It is very late and they decide they might as well stay up all night. The scene shows us the fact that Sir Toby Belch and Sir Andrew Aguecheek are having fun in the house of Olivia, together with Mary and Feste. I cannot say that the circle of Sir Toby's - it's the bottom of life, its dregs. Of course, respectability even does not smell here, but it is not the world of evil. Toby, Andrew, and Feste's antics present a "lower" world of performance that provides a coarse parallel to the courtly performances of love by Orsino, Cesario, and Olivia.

If the romantic characters of this comedy live in the kingdom of love, then the company of Sir Toby lives in the kingdom of fun, but this fun company has an enemy - Malvolio. Malvolio enters the room, angry with the men for drinking and making noise. He threatened to put out the company from home if they do not stop do it. The position he occupies is low, but he can bring enough damage for others. He is an enemy, for not only them but also a pleasant life in general. He is very outraged by the fact that people are willing and able to have fun, indulge in pleasures and love. He willingly supports Olivia in its efforts to comply with the mourning and live as cut off from the vanities of life. Malvolio is very ambitious. The position of butler gives him a small but tangible power over the household of Olivia. However, they are very disobedient and he constantly has to fight with them, but he does not lose hope to tame them.

Maria shows concern for Olivia's well-being. Maria's comment about Olivia's distress hints that Olivia is now racked with love-melancholy for Cesario. Cheerful company of Sir Toby decides to prank Malvolio and to falsify love letter from Olivia to Malvolio. This prank offers a counterpoint to the ceremonies and love-games that Orsino, Cesario, and Olivia have been playing so far. The rest of the scene establishes that Sir Toby is interested in Mary, as she is in Toby.
