Revolution in Cable Modem Technology

Cable modem is a subscriber unit that provides a high-speed internet access over cable TV networks. A cable modem uses an asymmetric technology, which is the most optimal for the user access to the internet.

Similarly, to a telephone modem, which sends and receives signals over the telephone network, a cable modem sends and receives signals over the cable television network. The most important difference to the user between these two types of modems is their bandwidth. Since telephone networks are designed to transmit only voice signals, the frequency range (and hence bandwidth) is rather limited. The network of cable television is designed to transmit full video and has a much higher bandwidth. This advantage allows transmitting a larger amount of information per unit of time. Networks of cable TV allow providing such services as internet and multimedia services with a very fast speed.

The first high-speed asymmetric cable modem system was developed, showed, and patented by the company of the Hybrid Networks in 1990.

In the late 1990s, a group of US cable operators established Multimedia Cable Network System consortium (MCNS) for the development of open and interoperable specifications for cable modems. The group factually combined the two most popular proprietary protocols at the time, taking the physical layer from the Motorola CDLP system and MAC-level from the LANcity system. After the creation of a draft specification, the MCNS consortium transferred control over it to the company of CableLabs.

The standard designed by CableLabs was called DOCSIS (Data over Cable Service Interface Specification). Almost all cable modems that are currently used are compatible with a particular version of DOCSIS. Due to differences between European (PAL) and American (NTSC) television systems there are two basic versions of the standard – DOCSIS and EuroDOCSIS.

A standard channel of cable television is used to transfer data (internet and multimedia services). A cable modem is connected to the user’s computer via USB-port, or through a network card, which like the TV is connected to cable TV networks. After the connection, the cable modem determines the channel through which the data can be transmitted. Then it is connected to the CMTS (center of cable modems), established by the operator that has a connection to the internet. A modem receives the IP address and allows the user to access the internet or other services offered by the operator. A cable modem accepts the digital stream of information transmitted over the cable television network, and sends it to a computer via USB or a standard Ethernet network interface.
