Mark Twain's Literary Works

An American Samuel Clemens got to work as a marine pilot, free miner, graphic designer, and journalist before becoming one of the most popular writers of the United States and around the world. Acquired life experience and the experience of numerous journeys were of good service to Samuel in his writing career.

The first steps as a writer Samuel takes working as a journalist in San Francisco, California. It is the very time where he begins writing under the pseudonym, Mark Twain. In 1965, Twain enjoys his first literary success. His short story about the frog of Calaveras County was named the best work of humorous literature, ever created in America before. Later on, he would write a book "The Innocents Abroad" in which he will describe his journey through Europe and Russia. The book was a huge success and made the author famous across America. Periodically lecturing in England and the USA, Mark Twain changed over to a sharp genre of satire, criticising American society and politicians. In this light, "Life on the Mississippi, written in 1883, is particularly noteworthy.

However, Twain’s greatest contribution to American and world literature is the novel about the adventures of Huckleberry Finn which he had been writing for 8 long years. This novel is considered as one of the best works ever created in American literature. "The Yankee from Connecticut at the Court of King Arthur", thrilling adventure stories, as well as a children story about Tom Sawyer and his adventures are no less popular books superbly written by Twain.

The writer stayed up to date with the political and social life of America, not to remain indifferent to significant events in the life of the country. Thus, criticising the American annexation of the Philippines, in “Life on the Mississippi" he described the bloody events caused by discord. This book was published only 14 years after the writer's death, which testifies to the strict censorship of those times.

The last decade of the writer's life is marked by a number of such pamphlets as "United Lynch States" "The War prayer" and others sharply criticizing racism, imperialism, discrimination and other vices. Among the late notable works we can find "Personal recollections of Joan of Arc", The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson ", "Following the Equator" and some biographical novels.

Mark Twain began his career with humorous verses and finished with terrible and almost vulgar chronicles of human vanity, avidity, selfishness, and even murder. Deservedly considered a hero of American literature, he was the idol of New York society and the most quoted writer of his time.
