A quick glimpse at Crime and punishment

Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment is undoubtedly a literature masterpiece, which is generally considered to be one of the greatest novels of all time. The given Russian novel was originally released in 1866, respectively, modern readers might worry that the novel could appear to be too foreign or too out of date to be relevant enough today. Fortunately, these concerns have no grounds.

I’m here to tell you that you shouldn’t worry regarding these concerns. In general, that’s an original, fascinating crime thriller, and perhaps, one of the most satisfying novels in the world.

The originality of this crime thriller is clearly demonstrated close to the very beginning when the protagonist, Raskolnikov dares to commit the crime of murder. By simply eliminating the whole mystery of this crime and having the protagonist be evidently guilty from the start seems to contradict to what would be a perfect crime thriller. However, Dostoevsky manages to create rather a gripping psychological drama gradually unfolding multiple layers of interactions between a cast of diverse characters. As a result, we wonder why he did it, if he’s going to be caught and what could happen to other key characters.

What really stands out in the novel is the amazing depth of human psychology that the author taps from his characters along with a constant high tension as well as pacing, which doesn’t let up. The characters aren’t dimensional or divided strictly into good and bad folks. Dostoevky thoroughly explores their motivations, fears and desires. He even takes a look at their subconscious via dreams as well as unintentional slips of the tongue. The tension reaches its climax, when the main hero comes across the detective Porifory and they start serious psychological battles for the ultimate in high stakes. The given battles appear to be deadly tests, keeping anyone on the edge of the seat. The psychology explored by Dostoevsky is amazing, especially when you consider that it was created before most up-to-date psychology was developed. The works of Freud and Jung weren’t known yet.

The author explores some heavy themes in this novel, including the obvious themes mentioned in the title. Dostoevsky also pays much attention to the idea of the superman originally illustrated by Jung as well as the Machievellian concept, telling that the ends justify the means. The author investigates saints and sinners as well as points out the gulf between lower and upper classes.
