The Effects of Fear in Sula

If you want to read Sula, a famous novel written by Toni Morrison, you should be prepared to follow her story from her childhood until her death. Pay attention to her interactions with other characters because they play an important role in the ongoing development of different emotions and feelings. Don’t forget about the controversial relationships of Sula, especially when it comes to her grandmother, friend, and some others because they accentuate the feelings and effects of fear.

It’s true that all characters are forced to either find an effective way to control their fears or cope with them. Throughout this interesting story, readers are expected to put aside their conventional expectations and enter a fictional world created by Morrison. This is where evil can be good and murders become the acts of love. Basically, this novel is focused on the controversial mysteries of people’s relationships and emotions while concluding that different social conventions are not enough to explain the affairs of characters.

Sula is the main character in this book and her impact on others is one of the most significant factors in developing emotions, including their fears. At the very beginning, you will be introduced to Shadrack, a man who lives in a constant fear of his unexpected death. He is not mentioned in other chapters, but his personal struggles symbolize the effects of fear in this well-known novel.

Shadrack had a bad experience in WWI so that he is overwhelmed with the fear that he may die suddenly. Keep in mind that the horrors of this life experience annihilated those boundaries that defined his personal perceptions and they started to grow out of his control. The main reason is that this character sees this world as a constant chaos and he can’t deal with excessive life paths and choices.

In response to these fears, he develops his intense need to order the entire existence so that Shadrack starts his own struggle that will last for many days. It’s all about making a place for his fears and finding an effective way to control them. Take into account the way that helps him control and deal with these fears because it’s called National Suicide Day. He marches through the whole town on an annual basis ringing cowbells and carrying hangmen’s rope. He also asked people to kill themselves to avoid their fears of unexpected deaths. People are disturbed, but then they get used to this original event.
