Philosophers Machiavelli and Socrates

Socrates is a Greek philosopher, whose teachings mark a turn in philosophy – from the observation of nature and the world to observation of a man. His work was the turning point in ancient philosophy. His method of analysis of concepts and the identification of positive human qualities with the knowledge drew attention of philosophers to the importance of a person.

Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) was a Florentine diplomat and historian, the Italian political thinker and writer. He was a supporter of strong government and allowed any methods for its strengthening, which was expressed in his famous work The Prince, published in 1532.

Even though these two philosophers lived in different periods of time, they both offered their views on such issues as society, rulers, and state.

Famous Greek philosopher Socrates believed that smart people should rule the country. Wise aristocracy was ideal for Socrates. The knowledge, according to Socrates, should be obtained not from a teacher, but through a deep self-knowledge. Socrates requirement about the fact that knowledgeable people should rule applies to all political forms. This political ideal of the knowledgeable critically disagreed with the principles of democracy and aristocracy, oligarchy and tyranny.

Socrates was the first to put forward the principle of legality, and he himself in his life and even death always adhered to it. Legitimacy, according to Socrates, is following the laws of your state. Freedom, according to Socrates, is beautiful and majestic heritage both for a person and for a state. All laws are interdependent due to the divine original. Rulers and people are equal to the law.

The Prince is a treatise of Florentine thinker and statesman Niccolo Machiavelli, where he describes the methodology of the seizure of power, methods of government, and the skills needed for an ideal ruler.

According to the government form, Machiavelli divides all countries on republic, the state-controlled autocratically, and the license (the worst kind). The best form of government is the republic, according to Machiavelli.

According to Machiavelli, a sovereign must have the following qualities:

He should be stingy, not generous, not to rob citizens and have a means of defense.

The sovereign must be moderately severe to protect society from the disorder, which generates robbery and murder. From population suffers from it, while only a few people suffer from punishment.
