Discussing a Conflict and Tradition in Things Fall Apart

Things Fall Apart is one of the most famous African novels written by Albert Achebe, a well-known writer and poet. There are many critics who call this literary work as the main answer to different problems with an inaccurate and limited presentation of the life and customs in Nigeria. That’s because Achebe doesn’t want to paint any perfect picture of this region, but he does his best to show the society with its virtues and flaws.

The plot of this famous book revolves around one village in Nigeria, both before and right after its first contacts with colonists from Europe and their religious beliefs. Basically, it’s focused on Okonkwo, one inflexible and ambitious clan member who wants to overcome his weak father’s legacy. It’s true that clans don’t judge people based on the faults of their fathers so that the status of this character is based on personal achievements.

Okonkwo is a great warrior, wrestler, and clan members who wants to preserve all customs and traditions. Besides, he respects his ancestors and their history, but he is rigid and impetuous, and this is what pits him against existing laws. When he decides to beat his spouse, this scene can be used as a great example. The beginning of this popular novel is devoted to his failures and success, while the other part tells readers how he kills a wife and hits a clansman.

According to existing clan laws, his property must be destroyed and he is obliged to leave the land of his father for 7 years. That’s why he goes to the homeland of his mother to get his first experiences of contacting Christian missionaries. However, Okonkwo wants to return back to his clan to find out that the life in this village also changed. He has many conflicts with them because of his desire to protect the culture of his ancestors. When the main character realizes that he is alone after killing an English messenger, he decided to commit a suicide, which is called an ultimate disgrace by his clan so that his body is not buried.

In conclusion, there are many important themes discussed by the author in Things Fall Apart, including conflicts between colonists and the traditional society. Albert used a number of traditional images of Africa in his popular novel in addition to classic Christina symbols. Transitions also play a huge role in this story, and this theme is reflected via the changing nature of people in the clan. Other interesting subjects include religious beliefs, duality, and so on.
