A Brief History of American Government

If you’re interested in the creation of the American government, the first thing that you should know is that it’s based on the constitution that went into its operation in 1789 after creation of the 1st Congress and electing George Washington. Basically, this government was called federal according to the fact that it’s formed by only 13 states or units that decided to give a part of their independence to form some central authority to become submitted to it. This means that it was a group of 13 separate states under Confederation articles united to form one state.

Don’t forget that the Declaration of Independence issued in 1776 first used the term of the US to call this country. However, until the constitution was issued and ratified, these states didn’t manage to form one state. They had a range of powers separately, such as conducting their foreign policies and trading negotiations so that Congress was eligible to do only the things that these states allowed. The most important fact is that the US as one nation didn’t exist until its constitution started functioning as the framework of its government.

Once this official law was in place, it didn’t stop the tension between the federal government and states, and there are many political thinkers and other officials who believed that states had their supreme authority. Based on this point of view, states had their power to nullify the acts of the US government is they didn’t agree with them. Calhoun, a senator of South Carolina, was one of the main proponents of this opinion, while John Marshall was his key opponent. The main position of Calhoun about the rights of states has persisted till modern times, but it was undermined considerably by the Civil War in American, as this historical event allowed the federal government to gain more power at the expense of states.

In addition, there were many objects served by this government, and six of them are worth your close attention. The main reason is that it was established to serve these purposes, including forming a better union, ensuring domestic tranquility, establishing justice, providing a common defense, promoting general welfare, and securing liberty. It’s interesting that some of these purposes are common to the government of most countries, such as their police power and defense against alien enemies, while other purposes arose from specific political ideas and experiences of the US with Britain.

If you’re interested in the creation of the American government, the first thing that you should know is that it’s based on the constitution that went into its operation in 1789 after creation of the 1st Congress and electing George Washington.
