Shakespeare’s Definition of Love in Three Different Ways

Shakespeare’s definition of love can be presented in three different ways. These three definitions are seen in Shakespeare’s three tragedies, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, and Antony and Cleopatra.

A famous tragedy by Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet was first staged in 1595. Centuries have passed, but even today, as in Shakespeare’s time, this sad story makes the heart flutter as this eternal theme continues to excite us, the theme of love that was tragically interrupted.

The tragedy Romeo and Juliet glorifies the loyalty feelings of love. Romeo and Juliet die, but they do not get separated. They die together; their love conquers death, because the death of young people permanently eliminates the age-old enmity.

In the tragedy Othello, Shakespeare gives another definition of love – a jealousy and prejudice love. The plot of the tragedy Othello was not invented by the author. Fatal love story of a noble Venetian and the Moor was borrowed by Shakespeare from the collection of short stories by Italian writer Giraldi Cinta One Hundred Tales.

Desdemona’s love to the Moors in the eyes of others appears as something completely unthinkable – on one hand, she is a smart and clever Venetian, and on the other – a rough nomad. The girl’s father directly accuses Othello of witchcraft that he used to make Desdemona fall in love with him.

Shakespeare aims to show that Othello and Desdemona are united not by a parent’s solution (the girl’s father never would have agreed to this marriage), nor by calculation or a spontaneous impulse, but by a sense of trust and deep understanding. But the trust of Othello to Desdemona quickly disappears. The Moor greedily catches the words of treacherous Iago, demanding that he tell him bluntly everything that he knows.

Antony and Cleopatra is another amazing play by Shakespeare, where we see manifestations of love. The name of the play is in itself quite clearly says what it deals with. The theme of the play is not Antony’s drama and political struggle between Antony and Octavius Caesar. These two plot lines are only a backdrop for the main theme, and the main theme is Antony and Cleopatra, the relationship between them. The play reveals the nature and significance of these relations. Between Antony and Cleopatra we see a love of lovers. There is no idealization of lovers and one cannot talk about the lack of understanding of the political consequences of their love. At first, Anthony oscillates between love to Cleopatra and duty to Rome. But the almighty power of his love for Cleopatra has the upper hand, and in the end the Egyptian queen won.
