Charlie Chaplin's Biography

Charlie Chaplin was undoubtedly one of the greatest film stars of the early days of Hollywood. This actor lived an intriguing life both in his films and behind the camera. He’s most recognized as an icon of the silent movie era. Chaplin is often associated with his popular Little Tramp personage, a man with the toothbrush mustache, bamboo cane, bowler hat and a funny walk. The actor was born in Walworth, London, on April 16th, 1889. His parents were Hannah Harriet Pedlingham and Charles Chaplin, who both were music hall performers. After Charles Sr. separated from Hannah in order to perform in New York City, the actor’s mother tried to resurrect her stage career. That’s so sad, but her singing voice tended to break unexpectedly. When it occurred, the stage manager spotted young Charlie standing in the wings. So he led him on stage, where five-year-old Charlie started singing a well-known tune. Charlie along with his half-brother, Syd Chaplin spent their lives in and out of charity homes as well as workhouses between mom’s bouts of insanity. As for Hannah, in May of 1903 she was committed to Cane Hill Asylum, where she lived until 1921, when Chaplin moved her to California.Chaplin started his official acting career at the age of eight, when he toured with The Eight Lancashire Lads. By the age of 18, the actor started touring with Fred Karno's vaudeville troupe. He joined them on the troupe's 1910 US tour. In December 1913, Chaplin traveled west to California and signed on with Keystone Studios' well-known comedy director Mack Sennett, who had witnessed Chaplin perform on stage in New York. Soon the actor wrote his brother Syd as he wanted him to become his manager. While at Keystone, the actor appeared in and directed up to 35 films, starring as the Little Tramp in almost all.In November 1914, Chaplin left Keystone and signed on at Essanay. There the actor made 15 movies. In 1916, he signed on at Mutual and created 12 movies. In June 1917, the actor signed up with First National Studios, after which he gave birth to Chaplin Studios. In 1919, Chaplin along with Douglas Fairbanks, D.W. Griffith and Mary Pickford formed United Artists (UA).Chaplin's career and life were stuffed with scandal and controversy. For instance, his first big scandal occurred during World War I, when his loyalty to his home country, England was questioned. The prominent actor had never applied for American citizenship, though claimed that he was just a paying visitor to the USA.
