Impact of Mass Media Violence on Children

Mass media depict drugs, sexual, psychological and behavioral disorders, which rarely coincide with reality. For example, television often shows a scenario where unrequited love necessarily leads to severe depression and suicide.

However, the everyday consciousness of people considers all the negative stereotypes of mass media real badly influencing people in general and children in particular. Childhood is a period of development, when children normally seek independence, explore personal identity and build relationships.

At the age of 3 to 11 years, children develop ideas about the world, cognitive and communicative skills are being built. In this period, when the child is just beginning to take shape as a person, he or she is influenced not only by parents, which is granted, but television also creates an image of the outside world. Excessive TV watching creates anxiety in children. Later, this situation causes the replacement of individual thinking by the group one, forming the dependency. As a result, watching television inhibits child’s personality development and the ability to think independently.

Children as the most sensitive and incompetent viewers, experience the greatest impact from the visual media. 20% of children aged from 9 months are slowed down in development if their parents replace live communication with TV. American psychologists have calculated that teenagers by twelve years old witness 100,000 scenes of violence and murder on TV.

Mass media, particularly television, are one of the most influential institutions of socialization of the human person. According to the results of the analysis, we can talk about the presence of co-ordination between the desire to watch violent scenes and aggressive behavior among young people.

A well-known Canadian psychologist, Bandura, and his colleagues conducted the first experiments related to the influence of media on human behavior. The study included children from 3 to 7 years old. They were shown short cartoons, where an adult negatively treated a doll. After watching these scenes, children were given time to plat a game within 10-20 minutes, while the researcher at the time was intently watching each child, fixing their actions and deeds. As a result of this experience, it was revealed that some of the children repeated the behavior of the actor, that is, simulated aggression.

Many TV shows form in children indifference to evil and lack of compassion towards other people or inanimate objects. Cartoons and TV shows show that all the problems and conflicts are solved in the majority by force, and children carelessly copy it.

Mass media depict drugs, sexual, psychological and behavioral disorders, which rarely coincide with reality. For example, television often shows a scenario where unrequited love necessarily leads to severe depression and suicide.
