World Goes Bang Band BOOM

On August 6, at about 8 a.m. there were two bombers flying above Hiroshima. The alarm was given, but, seeing that the aircraft was small, everyone thought that it was not a big raid. People continued to work without having to go to the shelter, and looked at the enemy aircraft. When the bombers reached the city center, one of them dropped a small parachute, after the aircraft flew away. Immediately after that, at 8:15 there was a deafening explosion that seemed ripped the heavens and the earth in an instant.

There was a blinding flash and a terrible roar – the whole city was covered with huge clouds of smoke. Wooden houses flashed one after another, until the end of the day the city was enveloped in smoke and flames. And when the flames died down, the whole city was a ruin. It was a horrible sight never seen in the history. There were burned corpses everywhere: many of them froze in the position in which they were during an explosion. Many of those who survived were moaning from the burns that covered the entire body. Everywhere one could see the scenes that reminded hell.

One bomb in an instant destroyed 60% of the city of Hiroshima. The number of dead reached more than 150,000 people. Various buildings in a radius of 2 kilometers from the epicenter were totally destroyed, and within a radius of 12 kilometers buildings were subjected to more or less significant damage. People were dying or suffered severe burns within 8.6 kilometers; trees and grass charred at a distance of 4 kilometers. As the result of the explosion and subsequent fire, 9 of 10 city houses were turned into ashes, which numbered 95,000. Never before the human imagination could conceive a damage of such size and such cruelty.

On August 8, another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, which also caused a lot of damage and resulted in numerous casualties. From a military point of view, the use of atomic bombs was senseless cruelty. By studying the effects of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the US Strategic Air Command was forced to conclude that Japan’s loss and military setbacks in Saipan, the Philippines, and Okinawa twice surpassed in importance the atomic bomb in the sense of belief in the inevitability of population destruction. From this perspective, the usual air raids on Japan in their totality were three times superior to the significance of an atomic bomb. The deterioration of living conditions, such as food shortages and malnutrition, have also played a more important role in the awareness of the Japanese people that it was impossible to continue the war, than the atomic bomb.
