Coney Island’s The Cyclone and Nathan’s Hot Dogs

Coney Island is a peninsula and former island located in Brooklyn. The name comes from the Dutch Konijn Eiland – Rabbit Island.

From the beginning of the Second World War, a water passage between Coney Island and Long Island was covered with earth, and the island became a peninsula. Long before Coney Island was flooded with vacationers it was an island, known among the Indians as the Land without Shade. Thus, the Indians noted the fact that the southern part of the island was illuminated by the sun all the time.

Since 1830s, Coney Island became a popular recreation of New Yorkers. The first carousel appeared on the island in 1876. In the period from 1880 to 1940 Coney Island was the largest entertainment area in the United States, which was visited by millions of people every year. In the best of times three big amusement parks (Steeplechase Park, Luna Park, and Dreamland) operated here. In addition, there were many other interesting places.

Astroland worked from 1962 to 2008 and was the major amusement park in the second half of the 20th century. Today, there are two attractions opened in the distant past function in the park. One of them is Cyclone, which runs from 1927. It is one of the few remaining roller coaster rides in the world with the guides and carriages made of wood.

The track is 800 m long and 26 m drop at its highest point. The first drop of the ride is at a 58.1 degree angle. The top speed of the ride is 60 miles per hour and it last about one minute and fifty seconds.

At the time when the island was prospering, Nathan’s Famous was opened in the area. Nathan’s Famous is US company that manages a network of fast food, specializing in hot dogs. The very first snack bar Nathan’s Famous was located in Brooklyn, at the corner of Surf and Stilvel Avenue, Coney Island.

The company started its business with a snack bar, where they sold hot dogs for 5 cents. Snack bar was opened in 1916. It was named after its founder, Nathan Handwerker, a Jew who emigrated from Poland. Nathan’s wife helped him with a snack bar. The main dish at the diner was hot dogs with his wife’s special sauce.

The very first snack bar Nathan’s Famous exists and is still in the same place where it was founded in 1916. The bar is open all year, serving customers inside, and in the summer months, when the influx of visitors is high, a special window opens to serve the increased number of clients from the street.
