A Chance for Life, With a German Soldier

The book Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Greene begins with a description of how a crowd gathers at the train station. Patty (Patricia Ann Bergen), a 12 year old first-person narrator, is thrilled as German soldiers are being brought to the town as prisoners of war.

The story focuses on the friendship between Patty and a German POW Anton, who escaped the prison. Patty meets Anton when a group of German POWs comes to her father’s store. Anton tells Patty that she is a person of value. In return, she protects Anton by hiding him above her father’s garage. Their friendship helps Patty to overcome her loneliness.

Chapter One introduces readers to the first-person narrator, Patty Bergen, and her difficult relationship with her parents (Pearl and Harry Bergen). She feels a lack of interest from them and tries to gain her father’s attention by lying about the arrival of the prisoners of war. Patty’s isolation from others becomes more obvious through the novel. The reader can see how lonely she is. Chapter Two shows further how Patty is ignored by her parents while the kindness of her grandparents is a contrast.

The predominant racism in the town is also seen in chapter one, especially in the scene when Mrs. Benn asks patty’s mother to fire Ruth for being the first in queue in front of her. Before this incident, Ruth was telling Patty about her fear for her son, who is supposed to fight for his country. The racism represented on Ruth shows the ignorance of the whites, who think that they are superior to African-Americans. Robert could lose his life for a country that gives him little or no legal or civil rights. The novel demonstrates the ignorance and hatefulness embedded in racist beliefs and uses the point of view of a 12 year old girl to show the ignorance of adults. This is obvious in her love for Ruth and her lack of understanding of the attack on Mr. Lee’s business.

One of the main themes of the novel is friendship and the lack of it. It is a key point as it shows the loneliness of Patty. She is not allowed to communicate with Freddy Dowd and the other girls. Her new relationship with Anton and relationship with Ruth are the two highlights of her life.

When spending time with Anton, Patty sees that it is possible to have a new life in the future. The novel advocates the importance of harmony and love to its readers.
