A Doll House – Family Power

A Doll House is Henrik Ibsen’s play, written in 1879.

The central theme of the play is the position of women in society. However, the problems of a play are not limited to women’s issues: the play is about freedom of the human person in general. The play compromises not only a man’s world, but also the society of the 1870s, its norms and attitudes, as well as dead laws of the bourgeois world.

A Doll House put before the readers and audience difficult questions. The playwright himself was a man of a stern but generous nature, and he was always attracted by the open, decent people able to love, who know how to sacrifice not only their well-being, but also themselves. In his play, Ibsen was the first to raise the curtain on relations in a particular family, showing the family power. It had to be done in order to understand the mechanism of marital and family happiness. According to Ibsen, the fate of society depends on it.

The main character of the play, Nora, sees the meaning of life in the love of relatives, namely husband and children. She sincerely believes that her family is full of peace and love. But Nora has a mystery: eight years ago, she forged the signature of her father be able to borrow money from a local businessman Krogstad. Nora did it in order to pay for treatment of her seriously ill husband. But the trouble has come. Krogstad begins to blackmail Nora. He wants to occupy a high position in the bank of Nora’s husband, Torvald. Krogstad’s letter to Torvald reveals a long-standing mystery. When Nora’s husband found out about everything he began to worry his respectable family could be the subject of gossip and scandals.

Torvald starts to treat Nora like a real criminal. His wife seems to cease to exist for him. The situation is solved fairly simple: Krogstad realized he had acted very dishonestly, gave up his claims, saying that nothing threatens Nora and Torvald.

Torvald is happy, but Nora is not the same. She realized that wishing family happiness, she went to the crime, and as a result has lost her self-esteem. In the hands of her husband she was a favorite toy. The house was built on lies and deceit: like a toy house, which is destroyed after the first occurrence of an evil fate. Nora is going to leave the house. Torvald tries to keep Nora, reminding her of the so-called duty to her husband and children. In response, she says that she is not only a mother, but above all a human being.

Ibsen’s drama opened a profound disparity between the respectable appearance and inner depravity of depicted reality. He protested against all social institutions of the system, requiring a maximum emancipation of women.
