Dreams in Death of a Salesman

What do you think about the American dream? It’s true that different people have different opinions about that because some of them think that it’s about being rich and popular, while others claim that this dream is about being supported by their families. Most people find it complicated to achieve their American dreams for different reasons. If you’re interested in this subject, you should read In Death of a Salesman written by Arthur Miller. This is where the author portrays his own perception of the American dream via specific symbols and characters, such as Biff Loman and Willy.

Basically, Miller uses a variety of symbols, including diamonds, to represent this controversial theme. When it comes to seeds, they symbolize the desperate attempts of Willy to prove the true worth of his toils as being a good father. They also symbolize his attempts to leave something for his relatives, but Willy fails to grow them in the end, and his failure symbolizes his relationships with Biff. That’s because Willy keeps blaming himself as Biff hasn’t done anything in his own life. Remember that those seeds that he plants are just like his false hopes because they both die and will never come true.

Pay attention to diamonds because they are used by the author to symbolize the downfall of Willy as a salesman. While Ben (his brother) is rich, he does his best to earn a living and cover endless bills. Willy regrets that he failed to achieve his financial security and his American dream. He used to work hard till his death, but he didn’t manage to be happy and wealthy. Besides, the house of Loman plays an important role in this popular book because his wife makes a last payment for it only after Willy’s death. This means that Miller uses it as a great symbol of his gruesome work that he had to do to support his family.

It’s hard to define the only meaning of the American dream. For Willy Loman, its definition doesn’t differ from the common one, but his mind becomes more and more drifted from the reality while trying to achieve it. The idea of this dream is that all people can earn their fortune, despite their past. That’s why Willy does his best to achieve success because he believes in this idea, but he is wrong. Don’t forget about social classes because they are also important for this story. Willy is just a salesman who believes that his success can come from being popular and liked by others, but he ends up being disappointed and dead.
