The Discrimination Caused by Stereotypes

The negative stereotype is the prejudice. Being negative attitudes in relation to a particular social group, prejudice contains a negative emotion, which gives rise to intolerance, injustice, brutality, immorality, discrimination, etc., hostile behavior.

As a rule, the presence of prejudice is not realized and, accordingly, its symptoms are not controlled. In addition, most people refuse to recognize having prejudices, even within members of their own groups (for example, ethnic). Of course, this does not mean that in this case prejudices don’t exist; it suggests mostly that it is shameful to have prejudices.

Since all of us have social stereotypes (they are inevitable), then all of us in one way or another have prejudices. Another thing is that different people can have prejudices against different groups: racial, gender, the third class, etc. Therefore, if you do not feel any negative feelings when talking to representatives of other races, there is no reason to believe that you are free from prejudices.

Stereotypes are harmful not only by themselves; they are harmful by cultivating prejudice and discrimination. After all, if encyclopedia readers adjust to believe that black people are intellectually limited, then why waste time and money on their children’s education? In this case, under the discrimination we mean putting people in a non-winning conditions or their unfair treatment by virtue of their group membership. To clarify: personal discrimination refers to discriminatory actions of individuals (for example, the boss refuses to hire Jews), whereas institutional discrimination refers to discriminatory policies or practices implemented by organizations or any other social institutions (for example, anti-Semitic immigration policy).

Prejudice, stereotypes and discrimination often go hand in hand, but a separate expression of each of these phenomena is also possible. When some ethnic group is given a neutral or positive property, prejudice and discrimination may not occur. In turn, a generalized prejudice against foreigners or crippled cannot imply specific stereotypes or acts of discrimination. In addition, in some cases, discrimination can be intentional or unintentional in the absence of prejudice or stereotypes.

Stereotypes, in contrast to the preconceptions and prejudices, are not always exclusively negative. Social attitudes, constituent of them, may more or less accurately reflect the reality and characteristics of certain groups of people.
