Getting to the very essence of Cask of Amontadillo

The Cask of Amontillado or alternatively spelled The Casque of Amontillado appears to be a brief story written by Edgar Allan Poe, originally published in the November 1846 issue of Godey's Lady's Book.

The overall story is set at carnival time in an unnamed Italian city, in an unspecified year. It’s all about a man taking fatal revenge on a pal who, he’s assured, has dared to insult him. Just like other Poe's works, and in keeping with the 19th-century fascination with the subject, the plot unrolls around a man buried alive and in particular, via immurement. Just like in The Black Cat and The Tell-Tale Heart, Poe managed to convey the story from the killer’s perspective.

As mentioned above, The Cask of Amontillado was first released in the November 1846 issue of Godey's Lady's Book. At that time, it was the most popular periodical in the USA. This story was only published one extra time during Poe's life.

The story’s told in the first person, accordingly we don’t have an opportunity to learn the narrator’s name until close to the end. So, until then, we’d better call this person The Narrator. The Narrator starts by informing us that Fortunato has dared to hurt him. However, even worse, that man has even insulted him. Respectively, it’s up to The Narrator to get revenge. He comes across Fortunato, drunk and dressed up in jester clothes for a carnival celebration. The Narrator tells he’s spotted a barrel of a rare brandy dubbed Amontillado. Fortunato seems to be very interested in verifying the wine’s authenticity. So, he as well as The Narrator make their way to the underground graveyard or simply catacomb of the Montresor family. Apparently, that’s where The Narrator stores his wine. Then, The Narrator leads Fortunato deeper into the catacomb, gradually getting him drunker. Fortunato coughs all the time and The Narrator constantly suggests that Fortunato appears to be very sick to be down among the damp crypts, so it makes sense for him to get back. Fortunato keeps talking about what he’s willing to grasp -the Amontillado.Eventually, Fortunato happens to walk right into a man-sized hole, which is a part of the wall of a nasty crypt. At this moment The Narrator rapidly chains his victim to the wall, then starts closing Fortunato in the hole by simply filling in the opening with bricks. When just one brick is left, he psychologically tortures the victim until he begs for mercy. Finally, we learn the executor’s name - Montresor. That’s how Fortunato calls him.
