Good and evil are the central concepts of the moral consciousness. It is through the prism of these concepts the human behavior and all activities are being assessed. These concepts are developed by moral consciousness a long time ago and even the first ethical systems were using them in their constructions. Good is the most general concept of morality that unites the totality of positive norms and moral requirements and serves as an ideal. Furthermore, it can be regarded as good moral purpose behavior in which case it acts as the motive action. At the same time good is a human quality (virtue). This multi-valued definition of good results from the very nature of morality that pervades all aspects of human activity.
Evil is the opposite of good. Category of evil is a generalized expression of ideas about everything immoral that is reprehensible and must be overcome. Evil is a generic term in relation to all morally negative phenomena – deception, meanness, cruelty, etc. Evil can be manifested both in little deeds and huge actions. Evil is rooted in habits, morals, and everyday psychology.
To act morally is to choose between good and evil. A person can make a free conscious choice only when they know what is good and what is evil, when they refer to the positive good and negative evil, and when they are trying to commit good they have its all objective conditions. At the same time one cannot say that the good is something absolute, because good and evil are interrelated. The moral life of a man is usually contradictory. On the one hand a person seeks to satisfy their desires, selfish inclinations, private interests, and on the other hand, they have an inherent sense of duty and responsibility to others.
Different approaches of the definition of good and evil mark certain moments of good behavior and specific manifestations of goodness. Good by itself is something uplifting for a man that lifts a person above selfish aspirations. Without the good the existence of human society and the individual is simply impossible. Evil on the other hand brings disharmony to society, the inner world of the individual, as well as destroys the original guidance of human life.
The good is represented in the human virtue as kindness, which is expressed in the appropriate units, human behavior, person’s ability to do some actions and inability to make others.
It is important not only to have an image of good, but to be able to defend the good, prove it in everyday life. It is necessary to develop the skills of good behavior. It is also important to distinguish kindness from fake kindness, disguised self-interest, selfishness, and indifference.
