Los Angeles Garment

Los Angeles garment industry is the largest industry that is highly represented in the region by new Asian immigrants, especially Koreans and Mexican immigrants.

The garment industry is one of the main international industries, which is represented by many countries in the world, due to quite cheap production costs in many of these countries. This leads to the clothing production being shifted from the developed countries to the developing ones. The United States, which has a wide-spread clothing industry, faces tough competition from the affluence of cheap goods exported from the third world countries. That is why American manufacturers have moved most of their production oversees to such countries such as Mexico, where the cost of labor are much cheaper. Mexico now is the main exporter of clothes to the United States. Even though the apparel of the US companies is produced abroad, the US manufacturers still control the ordering, distribution, and the marketing.

Not following this general movement of transferring apparel production abroad, the garment industry in Los Angeles has flourished. Between 1982 and 1992, the labor force of the industry has increased by 33%, whilst the employment figures in the apparel industry declined nationally by 12%. Now, Los Angeles is the biggest clothing manufacturer in the United States and its garment industry is one of the largest in Los Angeles. The reason why the garment industry in Los Angeles was growing while it was declining everywhere else in the country is mainly due to the immigrant labor.

Almost all garment workers in Los Angeles are immigrants. The vast majority of immigrants are Latinos, Mexican and expatriates from Central America. By far the largest group of immigrants is Mexicans, making up almost 75% of the entire workforce in the apparel industry. Mexican immigrants are mostly from the working classes. Asian immigrants mainly are found in the position of an employer, taking positions within the international financial community.

The structure of the industry in Los Angeles is structured in the following way, the US born, mostly white manufacturers atop the industry, then the contractors that are immigrants, consisting mostly of Asian origin. The contractors serve as the link between big business and the workers. As Bonacich states there seems to be a general trend of Korean or Asian contractors employing Mexican or Latino workers in the Los Angeles garment industry. The expert reported that 51% of garment factory owners were Asians, most of whose employees were Latinos.
