The Biography of Emiliano Zapata

Emiliano Zapata was born on 8 August 1879 in San Miguel Anenecuilco, Morelos and died on April 10, 1919, near the city of Cuernavaca. He came from a poor peasant family.

During the revolution of 1910-17, Emiliano headed the peasant movement of the Center and South of the country. A group of revolutionaries and Zapata developed a program of struggle for the resolution of the agrarian problem, known as "Plan de Ayala», that provided the dissolution of large land ownership for the redemption that should be further allotted to peasants. Due to his exceptional military skills, he played a major role in the overthrow of the counterrevolutionary government of V. Huerta. Interruptedly from December 1914 to July 1915 the units of Zapata together with the division of Villa occupied the capital of Mexico. Under the pressure of the widespread peasant movement, the Mexican Constitution of 1917 got a number of amendments, reflecting the interests of the peasantry. In 1919, Zapata was assassinated by Jesus Guajardo at the order of General Pablo Gonzalez. The headquarters of his army were located in the town Tlaltizapan between Cuautla and Cuernavaca. Knowing that Zapata is the mind and the absolute leader of the peasant movement, Carranza ordered General Pablo Gonzalez to eliminate Zapata by any means. Emiliano was a linchpin of revolution, and by killing him, it would be easy to neutralize opposition in the central and southern parts of the country.

Gonzalez developed a cunning plan to deceive Zapata. Thus, Jesus Guajardo pretended to be dissatisfied with the Carranza regime and alleged his desire to move to the side of Zapata with a group of soldiers and by taking some military weapons and ammunition. However, Zapata did not believe him and decided to check whether Guajardo was sincere by sending him to battle against Federal troops. With the consent of Gonzalez and Carranza, Guajardo attacked a detachment of federals and killed 50 people. It made Zapata trust him and they made an appointment to meet at hacienda located between his hometown – Anenecuilco and the South army headquarters in Tlaltizapan.

By the time of Salazar’s arrival, there had been set an ambush. It was a fatal mistake of Zapata to leave the main part of his squad on the outskirts of the village. With a few people he came to the door and hit the bell. It was the signal for the gunners hiding on the roof of the building. Salazar was met with a hail of bullets. Wounded, he managed to grab the handle of a revolver, but his horse fell down dead, crushing the rider. There followed re-fire that finally took Zapata’s life away.
