Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

In The Rime and the Ancient Mariner, Samuel Taylor Coleridge manages to join together a set of important natural symbols, including Christ and the albatross. This is how he focuses on his personal beliefs that God is present in the nature. That’s why the mariner is propelled into his state of delight when he finally discovers and understands his love to God.

Basically, the author uses the imagery from different religious symbols in the nature, and this is what helps him write a literary work that articulated how the realization of love to God in people possesses a great power to eliminate such negative emotions as anguish and pain. By describing the aspects of salvation with the main concepts of penance and sea, Samuel makes his key message of humility and repentance simpler to understand by the targeted audience.

It’s worth mentioning that the albatross is something holy because it’s considered by sailors as a symbol of their fortune and luck in the sea. Besides, it’s a symbol of Christ, his appearance, and virtues. You should focus on the scene where the mariner slays the albatross even without giving any good reasons to ground his choice. It’s just like people judge Christ whose divide perfections are so evident in the Bible. Keep in mind that Christ represents the only chance of the whole mankind to achieve their eternal life, they still punish him.

When it comes to the albatross, this bird also symbolizes the only chance of sailors to escape their icy death, but the mariner ruins this chance when he decides to kill it. There is an opinion that shooting the albatross is a symbol of people’s original sin against God and this scene is written by the author to symbolize their evil wrongdoing. There are certain signs used by Coleridge too, including the extraordinary weather included in this book.

At the very beginning of his voyage, the ship of the mariner sails with mild breezes and ideal weather conditions. When the story progresses, the weather suddenly changes considerably so that this ship is driven by stormy winds. The albatross symbolizes a new hope and life for sailors, and the weather is fine again, but when the mariner shoots it, a wild storm starts again. Finally, there are other examples of the symbolic meanings of this bird in this book, such as a scene when shipmates decide to take a good omen off the mariner’s neck. The dead albatross serves as a symbol of his terrible offense.
