Response Paper on Trifles by Susan Glaspell

Susan Glaspell was one of the key figures, who participated in the creation of the theater, and then strongly supported its creative vitality, above all by the fact that during its existence as a playwright she did not miss a single season. Glaspell started her career as a writer, and did not even think about drama.

As a rule, a central place in Glaspell’s works is dedicated to a figure, whose searches of own path lead to a confrontation of urbanization and industrial expansion, erasing all differences, both on the individual level and on the level of the whole society. The salvation of such a character is a genuine connection to the land, spiritual relationship with nature, which leaves a moral victory on character’s side.

Glaspell wrote about a dozen of plays, more than half of which are one-act plays. Her genuine dramaturgical debut became her second play, Trifles, which really opened her range as an artist. The play was written at the request of Cook in a very short time in straitened circumstances, but it is surprisingly devoid of any trace of its forced writing. On the contrary, everything in it is organic and natural, all noted with the deep simplicity, but it is the simplicity and naturalness that are unique to the true work of art.

The action of this fairly small in size play begins without prior swing, helping the public to understand what happens. The audience sees the house on a deserted farm in the absence of its owners. District attorney, the sheriff and the farmer appear, accompanied by the wives of the sheriff and farmer. The scene with uncleaned table, dirty dishes and bread thrown on the floor sets an alert tone and nervous rhythm. From the brief remarks, the characters exchange, it turns out that there was a murder and it is unknown who committed it. The wife of the murdered person is on suspicion in jail and women need to collect some clothes and things for her. Men are made to inspect the house for clues and mysteries resolution.

Glaspell deliberately turned away from the tempting detective course. The play is written from the female perspective, in other words, from the perspective of feminism.

There are two contrasting groups in the play. Men, who are slow-witted, arrogantly believe that only their strength will help them find the answer and all women are capable of is trifles. But men roam around the house, as lost, because they do not see the little things around them. Women when looking for the answers started with little things and penetrated the mysteries, inaccessible to their companions. Taking into account all the little things they are able to see a terrifying picture of the events of recent days, ended with murder.
