Scottish Immigration to Nova Scotia during the 19th Century

In the 19th century, many people left their home and immigrated to the new continent to search better life. They went to the North America. It was the new chance for people to start a new life. Many people immigrated to America and the Scots were not the exception. Scots were one of the many nationalities, which could establish in Canada and create the Kingdom of Scotland. The history of the Kingdom of Scotland starts in 1621, when Sir William Alexander provided a charter for Nova Scotia. On Cape Breton Island and at the Bay of Fundy were the first settlements, it was established by Alexander. In addition, the biggest immigrations was in the 19th century, when 170,000 Scots crossed the Atlantic Ocean from 1815 to 1870. In this period, it was near the 17% of the total British migration. 157 of every 1,000 Canadians were of Scottish origin. This date has accorded by 1871 census. The residents of Quebec consist 4.1 percent of Scots, and after this wave of migrants, it grew to 33.7 per cent. many people who went to Canada were farmers and artisans. Business and professional people also left their job to went to the Nova Scotia. There were teachers, priests, lawyers and so on. They united and created the new intelligentsia. Moreover, they established schools, colleges and etcetera.

What the reason this massive immigration? Firstly, they left their home and found the same native ground, the mountain of Scotland. The weather, the soil and the ground reminded the native nature. Another reason was the policy of the British government. The land clearances in Scotland forced the Scottish to immigration. Thus, the fences were established where fences had been. The important reasons why scots went to Canada is poverty, the resident who lived near the mountains. People who couldn’t pay were eviction, and the victims choose the Canada to continue their lives. From 1870, the percentage of farmers among immigrants to Canada estimably fell. It was caused by the reduced urbanization and the industrialization; farmers could work in the fields without any obstacles. When in the highland region population pressures was lessened, it allowed Highlanders to stop immigration to the Nova Scotia. In spite of the immigration, the Scots were able to preserve their identity. Scots have never been sufficiently numerous to dominate. They are hardworking and persevering.
