Napoleon Bonaparte's Military Leadership

A genius of Napoleon inspires present-day historians, scientists, military officers or politicians who try to figure out the secrets of his brilliant campaigns and mystery of his matchless leadership. Many people would agree with the statement that people are not born geniuses they become them. This also holds a true about leadership that is considered to be learned. Tracing the rise of Napoleon as a soldier to the commander, we cannot but identify his best personal features and skills that placed him on the pedestal.

First, Bonaparte possessed an incredible charm and hypnotic power over the crowd. However, it is not enough to be attractive to the others but to make the ability a weapon to your own advantage. Knowing it Napoleon regularly practised his ability to impact people’s minds. Thus, he convinced his revolutionary companions, boosted the morale of his troops, negotiated with the allies.

Second, his high intelligence and logical thinking made him a prominent tactician and strategist during the military operations. He had a perfect memory and was quick to remember the facts and observe every single thing in detail. The ability to concentrate enabled him to make smart and victorious decisions. Iron will and the talent of manipulator let him build a bright military career at the early age. Aged 27, he became a commander of the army and seven years later a military general and Emperor of France.

All above qualities helped him solve multiple administrative tasks and win recognition with the public. Moreover, only due to his tremendous capacity for work Bonaparte managed to come out on top. He often worked more than 18 hours a day and sometimes did not rest for 3 days. Being a great player both on the battlefield and the arena of politics, Napoleon used his ability to think over the matter in advance that is an invaluable trait of a leader. Up to the year 1806 and even after his abdication he secured his power as an inspirer. When defeated, he did not betray his ideals. His witty and wise concepts are still published in the books of military art. Thus, he was right saying that physical force comes second, as the moral force decides the victory. His appeal to the soldiers’ soul rather than to their mind embraved them before the fight. Despite the power to lead people, Napoleon followed common but no less important postulates, for example, observing a strict discipline and adherence to the chain of command.

His restless nature of a leader never let him stop learning. From an early age, he took his lead from Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar shaping himself as leader of the nation.
