History of the Navajo People

The Navajo tribe has about 300 thousand people. It is the largest Indian tribe in the United States. Most of them live in the Navajo Indian Reservation, which stretches for 70,000 square kilometers area from Arizona, New Mexico to Utah. The Navajo tribe is the sovereign and the autonomous: there are the laws Navajo. Like the most tribes of Indians, Navajo call themselves "people," which in their language sounds like "Dineh". Traditional accommodation of Navajo is called "Hogan". Navajo housing Hogan is built of logs and coated with clay. Doors of clay houses always directed to the east. Navajo believe that there are four main directions: the east, the west, the north and the south, and the east is the most important of them.

In the XI century, Navajo broke away from the Athabasca and moved from Alaska to the southwest United States (where their main occupations were the agriculture and the animal husbandry, there were crafts such as a weaving, a pottery, etc.). Northern Navajo origin is confirmed by the home-dugout and some other features. At the end XVII - early XVIII centuries in Navajo territory, fleeing from Spaniards, representatives of the Pueblo tribes settled on the Navajo's territory. This leads to the fact that Navajo borrow Pueblo's traditions, in particular, they have started to build a fortress-pueblo which reminiscent of the ancient pueblos fortress. The pueblo’s fortresses are aimed to protect from the Spanish and Comanche raids and Jutes. Until the XIX century, it continued the gradual disintegration of primitive society; while Navajo actually maintained the independence from the Spanish colonial and (later) the Mexican authorities. The loss of the independence came after the US capture in 1848. In 1860, the Navajo settled in reserves (in the territory of the states of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah).

Nowadays Navajo main occupation is cattle. Navajo actively participate in the movement to improve the lives of Indians. Most of believers are Christians or followers of the syncretic cults. Representatives of the Navajo are well known experts in the production of the silver jewelry and the weaving. The wedding baskets are used in the religious ceremonies and the important events such as weddings. Like the "Hogan", Navajo baskets are always opened, and are installed in such a way that they directed to the east. Representatives of the Navajo use sheep for the meat and the wool. Wool is used for weaving traditional Navajo blankets.
