A Gridlock on Christmas Eve

Time before Christmas holidays is very busy as many people shop in order to get gifts and presents for their loved ones. This is the period when a lot of stores offer discounts on many things.

Days of massive discounts in the process of urbanization in the middle of the 20th century led to the emergence of huge traffic jams in major US cities.

Hundreds of thousands of people rush to shops in hopes to buy things at the most competitive prices. Such outflows create traffic jams and queues in shops. Everything is overcrowded; people can’t be on time. Christmas holidays are a very busy time of the year that is traffic jams are very common. It is always better to buy gifts far in advance otherwise you risk to spend several hours in the car sitting in the traffic jam, which also can lead to not be on time for Christmas dinner.

One of the most popular events before Christmas is Black Friday. It is believed that this phrase was first used by traffic police of Philadelphia, who had to deal with long traffic jams on the roads. The police had to work overtime. At the time, when half of the city itself took time off to buy presents, it was strictly prohibited for the traffic police to take time off due to the force majeure on the streets – for police it was a really hard day.

Another reason for traffic jams on Christmas is that many people rush home or to visit their parents. Many people try to leave early in the morning in order to be on time for Christmas. Usually this phenomenon of leaving early isn’t unique to the day before Thanksgiving.

Traffic patterns, and ensuing traffic jams cannot be predictable around Christmas time because each year the holiday falls on a different day of the week and drivers’ travel plans vary.

Typically, during Christmas travel times around the country go up about 20% the Wednesday afternoon before Thanksgiving, as opposed to a regular Wednesday afternoon rush hour when the traffic is increased by maximum 12%.

In other words, if your journey ordinarily takes you 60 minutes, on Christmas you should plan on 72 minutes of the journey or even more. Such crossroad cities, as Hartford, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Chicago, can experience the biggest increases in traffic because many travelers pass through them on their way to other destinations.

This isn’t the same during the rest of the holiday weekend, as people’s return plans are different enough in general that there are no significant changes in the traffic.

Conditions are different each year and the state of the economy also plays a significant role, but still in during the Christmas holidays, the roads are more crowded than during the regular days.
