Oliver Twist Analysis

Dickens’s "The Adventures of Oliver Twist" is the first realistic novel in the English literature of the XIX century. The novel is a clear reflection of democratic views of the great English writer, his faith in the nobility and the intelligence of an ordinary person.

The hero of the novel, Oliver was born in a workhouse where exhausted and starving children rather survive than live. The fate of these weak children, like Oliver, was inherently destined and it is a marvel if they could escape such an unenviable destiny.

Any attempt of a protest is severely suppressed and punished by caregivers. An “obstinate” Oliver, for example, becomes one of the candidates for the gallows, because he dared to ask for a helping of the liquid slurry. He is subjected to solitary confinement and a cruel flogging. Thereafter Oliver is sent to serve at coffin maker or a despotic chimney sweeper, who has already beaten several boys to death, and the undertaker.

In the second part of the novel Oliver, having escaped from his master, receives new lessons of life in London, where he is surrounded by a gang of thieves. The education of Oliver is in the hands of a fencing cully Fagin, Sikes the burglar, a prostitute Nancy and a villain Monks. They are trying to force him to do the thieves ' trade, but Oliver shows his grit by refusing to participate in nefarious undertakings. By a happy coincidence, the boy meets a nice old man Mr Brownlow, who gives him a shelter. Not thinking about his personal benefit, Mr Brownlow helps the child and then becomes his foster father.

Dickens himself is much interested in the fate of his hero and compels us to empathise boy's sufferings and joys. The main character is good, truthful, virtuous, thus, no filth from the outside world cannot disgrace him. Regarding the genre, the novel can be social, because it describes the life of various social classes and their regularities. At the same time, it is also an adventure novel. The novel contains the elements of a detective: there is the crime, intrigue, discovery and punishment of criminals. Generally speaking, it is a bildungsroman, a story about the spiritual and intellectual formation of Oliver. Therefore, we can conclude that the author boldly and skillfully synthesised many genre varieties of the novel in his literary work.

In conclusion, "Oliver Twist" is considered one of the most powerful novels because it raises acute problems of the social and moral welfare, lawlessness, bullying at schools, suffering of the poor workhouse people and the criminal world of London.
