The Oil Painting in the Early Renaissance : the art that inspires

Oil painting belongs to a very ancient method of painting. There is no exact data when it was used for the first time as a binder of paints. The invention of oil paints was important for the further development of painting as an art. It is known that even primitive cavemen painted dwellings with pigment mixed with oil and fats, the prototype of oil paints.

With the introduction of oil painting begins a new era in art. Since that time, it had moved forward on rapid strides. None of the binders the art is obliged more for its development as to oil. Oil gave the painter freedom and a way out of a subordinate position in relation to the material. Oil inspired the artist and created an extraordinary rise opening new horizons and possibilities for endless creative achievements.

Painters of the Renaissance truly reveled in the new method and learned to use it to perfection. The best examples of oil paintings are the works of artists of different nationalities of that period, representing the harmonic link between the materials introduced into the matter, and their creativity. It was the era of developed technology and best practices, which later became the ideal to aspire to for many generations of painters.

In the XVIII century, with the decay of art, the decline of the art of painting is observed. The best techniques of the old oil painting get lost and gradually fade into oblivion; however, oil firmly keeps its position and does not lose its value. Due to the strengths of the traditions and skills, it penetrates everywhere, even in the area of monumental wall painting, which, of course, very soon suffers a complete defeat.

By the beginning of the XIX century, the whole technique of painting generally resolves itself to oil painting. Painting grew and became strong due to the oil technique but in the end, it started abusing it.

The crumble look of the later Renaissance works of art, which got yellow, brown and cracked, is observed in the oil painting of the time causing a negative treatment in relation to oil. First, oil painting is expelled from the walls and replaced by a fresco painting; then new binders for easel painting are sought for.

The painting has long been standing in front of the intractable dilemma: either continue to use oil paints or replace them with other colors that are more responsive to contemporary needs. Only when the happy resolution of this problem is found the next generation will be able to obtain respective pictorial art heritage.
