Zebra Mussels and Quagga

When studying more about Quagga and Zebra mussels, you should understand that these are 2 species from the genus Dreissena. Basically, they both look quite similar, but if you look at them closely, you will see certain differences. When it comes to zebra mussels, they have a triangular form, sharp edges, and flat sides, while the Quagga ones have rounded sides without any sharp edges. They have dark rings on their shells and look a bit pale near edges.

It’s possible to find both mussel types in great lakes, waterways, and inland lakes in different regions. Another important fact that should be mentioned is that they can’t live out of the water for a long time. Quagga mussels are originated in the Dnepr River in Ukraine, while the zebra ones are called small fresh-water bivalves originated in the Caspian Sea. They both are discovered in America too. There are certain questions that should be answered to master this subject properly.

What are these mussels all about? Quagga and zebra mussels are fresh-water mollusks that colonize rivers and lakes, and some of their favorite habitants include the upstream of dams in calm waters. Besides, they are abundant on rocky and hard surfaces. How do they travel? These mussels can attach themselves to boats to introduce to new areas. It’s interesting that there are certain programs that help people detect them before becoming a major issue.

What is a problem? These mussels can cost all taxpayers a lot of money, but the worst part is that they can close down their access to waters for commercial opportunities and recreation purposes. The main reason is that these species tend to clog water intake filters and pipes, this decreasing specific water pumping capabilities in terms of water treatment and power plants. Once mussels establish, they can change different ecosystems and food sources important to such species as trout and salmon.

What can people do to stop these mussels? There are different things that can be done to achieve this simple goal, including their avoidance to trade, buy, and plant these species. It’s also advisable to drain, dry, and clean all watercrafts on a regular basis, especially before using them in other water bodies. Remember that it’s illegal to release, posses, and transport them so that you will have to face certain penalties if you will break this law. It’s designed to protect clean-water reservoirs from the spreading of these mussels.
