Why the Concept of Heroes Survives the Centuries

The concept of heroes is relevant today as never before. Every philosophical theme becomes relevant when it’s underlying acute problems that require resolutions. In the heroic age, heroes were represented in myths while heroism and valor were recognized as standard behavior. Not everyone could be a hero, but many aspired to be like glorious heroes, trying to reach the heroic level and scope.

Hero is an outstanding personality, brave and courageous, ready to sacrifice for the sake of high ideas and fearlessly meets death. The hero is not only the victim; they are saviors, redeemers, liberators, those who by power, courage or other valuable qualities bring benefits of others. This is why the concept of heroes is immortal in human history and serves as a role model.

Conduct of specific empirical heroes always presumed the presence of samples and standards of heroism in the culture embodied in myths, legends, art, theory, and ideology. The image of the hero in a culture is a crystallization of the heroic and its maximum implementation.

The image of the hero is not always linked to the performance of the ideal moral norms. Hero is the one who protects and saves, but kills for the sake of it, not feeling any mercy and grace towards the enemies. In addition, the hero is powerful and often excessive, it is peculiar for the hero to play with the great strength, and if necessary, he can be sly and apply magical abilities. Therefore, the hero is more over the moral rather than moral in the usual sense. At the same time, the hero is the one who one way or another brings good to people.

The main trend of change of the image of the hero in contemporary post conventional culture, partly leveling the ethno-national differences and thus universal, is the demythologization and deserialization of the hero. From the sacred messenger of the upper world, from a figure directly related to the gods, the hero became an ordinary man. You could even say that the hero goes to the traditions and memories, myths and legends, only leaving a heroic behavior.

However, even these real heroes that covered themselves with glory on the battlefield, or who have made a major contribution to the treasury of knowledge and skills, are exposed in the public consciousness, questioning, analysis and criticism, and often – expose or ironic comments.

Today there is an idea of a female heroine and heroine mothers. The idea of a female heroine is almost not present in the ancient representations of heroes; the only exception is the German giantess Brünnhilde. The hero is a man, it is his strength, courage and a mysterious connection with higher reality gives him a heroic quality.
