Our Performance of Phantom of the Opera

One day at school we decided to stage The Phantom of the Opera in the adaptation by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The Phantom of the Opera is a gothic novel by Gaston Leroux, which was published in installments in the newspaper Le Goal from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910 and was later published as a separate novel. On the creation of the novel Leroux was inspired by a newly built Opera in Paris, which still is one of the most famous theaters in the world. Leroux dedicated the novel to his younger brother Joseph.

Several theater productions and several films were shot based by the plot of the novel. The first most famous film adaptation of the novel was a movie released in 1925. The bigger popularity the novel received after the release of the musical in 1986, which became one of the most long-running performances on Broadway.

We had a difficult time preparing the performance of such an importance within six weeks. We thought it would be very difficult to find people with good voices to perform one of the most famous plays in the world. Surprisingly, when auditions started we found out a lot of people with operatic singing talent.

For the next six weeks we were spending every moment rehearsing, preparing stage props, creating costumes, writing the program and looking for someone who could sponsor us. Our rehearsals were exhausting, but it definitely was worth the final result. It felt like we were living at school, spending all our free time there from the very early morning to late nights practicing, building, but despite all the hardships we still managed to have a lot of fun. There were 150 students engaged in working on the play, but we became a big family, each member of which was ready to help each other.

In order to professionally stage the performance of The Phantom of the Opera we needed a theatre; at school, the only such place was a basic sports hall, so we did incredible transformations to the hall. A week before the performance, the hall was hardly recognizable. It looked like a real theater with tiered seating, necessary lighting, and an amazing stage. Everything was created mostly by the students themselves.

For most students the day of the performance was no different than any other school day. However, for those of us who took a direct part in the preparation of the opera that was the day we were looking forward to.

The performance turned out to be a great success. The staff of the school thanked all the students who participated in the performance of The Phantom of the Opera.
