My Best Friend
My best friend appears to be somebody I’ve known since my childhood. Our friendship can be traced back to the time when I was 10. His name’s Harry. He lived just a couple of blocks from my home. We actually had much in common and we were used to spending time together during the weekends. I remember that many of my favorite hobbies arose under his influence. Moreover, I actually learned to play the guitar exactly from him, and I even started martial arts classes simply because he did the same. It in 1974. So, you can easily figure out how old I am. The years have gone by. Today I sit here typing on my laptop and I still have my electric guitar sitting right beside me. This hobby changed my life a lot and I’m grateful to him for this because he was the one who opened the world of guitar music for me. I often recall those days when we were used to riding our bicycles. It was my first bike and I was eager to own one that look just like Harry's. It would sound weird, but it sometimes it seems to me that he had a great influence on me in my early years. Perhaps, it’s because I simply saw him as a sort of role model. At the weekends, we were used to going over to each other's house to practice guitar as well as martial arts, such as Tae Kwon Do. Those were the days when everybody admired Bruce Lee, and as I remember, we were used to going to school with our own version of nan-cha-ku. We had it tucked away in our book bag, as we didn’t want our teachers to see it. When recalling this today, I never fail to relish its magic splendor. That’s so sad that those days of innocence will never be revisited again. However, when I look at my 13-year old son, I can almost see him enacting some of the things I was used to doing in the past.Unfortunately, he’s no longer in contact with me. It’s because we’ve lost contact since we found themselves in separate secondary schools. He went to St. Patrick's Secondary School, while I happened to attend Raffles Institution for my secondary school. Perhaps, you wonder whether I I miss him today, at the age of 49 or not. My answer would be affirmative. Of course, I was eager to get in touch with Harry, and probably with some of my old classmates from Primary school, though I don’t have an opportunity to find them. Many years ago, I heard that he went on to be a sailor having graduated from seaman's course. It would nice to learn how each of them is currently doing. Thousands of times I tried to reach out to him. I kept searching for his name on the web, on Skype. Moreover, I even dared to contact the Singapore National Registry, but all to no avail.
