Incest in Greek Mythology

Incest is a sexual intercourse between close blood relatives (parents and children, brothers and sisters). Most cases of incest (15%) occur between siblings.

The ancient Romans used the word incestus when talked about adultery in general. In religious terms, incest was applied to unchastity of priestesses of Vesta, the desecration of the sanctity of the Vestals by others, what Clodius was accused of, as well as forbidden relationship between relatives, or incest, for example, between brothers and sisters, and so on.

In ancient pagan beliefs, incest was a normal way of life of the gods. All the ancient mythology is full of stories of incest. However, King’s Oedipus offense in Sophocles is called a sin.

Hesiod in his poem Theogony tried to organize an intricate genealogy of the ancient Greek gods, who didn’t consider incest as something reprehensible, unlike ancient Egyptian gods. Cronus, the son of Uranus, the god of the sky, prompted by his mother Gaia castrated and overthrew his father trying to stop the infinite fecundity of the parent and gain power. To take his place, Cronus married his sister Rhea. Fearing their children, he began to devour them. Only Zeus, the sixth child of Cronus and Rhea, avoided this fate. Instead, Rhea gave Cronus a stone wrapped in cloth. When Zeus grew up he gave a magic potion to his father, after which he vomited the swallowed children. Freed, the children of Cronus and Rhea rebelled against their father. Zeus and his brothers and sisters overthrew Cronus, castrating him and leaving him in Tartarus. The blood of the deposed god, getting into the sea, foamed and Aphrodite, the goddess of love, emerged from it. The era of Olympic gods began. Much has changed in the world, but not the tradition of the gods to marry sisters. The seventh and most famous loving wife of Zeus was his elder sister Hera.

Greek myths, not condemning incest of gods, treated incest between mortals as something critical, considering it a violation of the divine order. Incest between the characters in myths often ends in death of those who experienced a forbidden love. Aeolus, a character in the play by the ancient Greek playwright Euripides, when learned about the love of their children, gave their child to dogs, and sent the sword to his daughter, ordering her to commit suicide.

Ancient Greek myths, not approving the carnal love of a brother and a sister, considered it not immoral, depraved, and a crime, but rather a tragedy of irresolvable conflict between compulsive desire and illegal incest.
