Ideas and Ideals of Thoreau

Henry Thoreau was one of the most important transcendentalists in the world. Basically, many people remember his as a man who was quite outspoken in terms of conformity ideas and ideals. That’s because he advocated and believed in the idea that all people shouldn’t be involved in such activities as the government, transportation, and others if they might provide them with any possibility to conform. Keep in mind that most of his ideas and ideals were based on the fact that if people are conformed, they can’t experience their lives in a natural way.

The government was one of the major subjects discussed by Thoreau because he believed that it leads to people’s conformity. Besides, he claimed that the government was one of the biggest wastes in the US society for many reasons. The main one is that authorities hindered people’s actions, ideas, and beliefs while trying to tell them what was wrong and what was right. This idea was against the beliefs of Henry completely because he wanted the society to experience and learn new things for them without letting the government control each move.

Perhaps, that’s why Thoreau was against organized education as he claimed that the government was trying to control people’s lives so that it was just another method for it to achieve this goal. He also wasn’t fond of the idea of transportation, but this idea may seem a bit picky on his part for some readers. For instance, Henry believed that American people were becoming lazier so that they stayed away from such basic physical activities as running, walking, riding, and so on.

The government set special laws for people’s driving age. When they go by these rules and start driving, Henry claimed that people were conforming to the ideas and intentions of the government. This means that they can’t make any important decisions for themselves because they all are based on something that the government considered right. It’s interesting that marriages had certain drawbacks according to the ideas and ideals of Thoreau. That’s because they were seen as conformity too.

In conclusion, you know that Henry believed in transcendentalism, which is all about the system of philosophy that focuses only on spiritual and intuitive above anything material and spiritual. This concept is present via the ideas and works of Thoreau who expressed its most important points, such as taking only what people need, getting back to the nature, and simplicity.

Henry Thoreau was one of the most important transcendentalists in the world. Basically, many people remember his as a man who was quite outspoken in terms of conformity ideas and ideals.
