Christopher Columbus, The Conqueror

Early in the morning on October 12, 1492, the ships under the command of Christopher Columbus anchored off the coast of the Bahamian island Guanahani (now the San Salvador). Naked and unarmed residents of the island welcomed sailed strangers with interest.

If the natives knew what grief this man would bring them, they were unlikely to meet him so carefree. It took only two years, and some of them were killed, others became slaves or died from infectious diseases brought by strangers – scarlet fever, typhoid, and smallpox.

Columbus accidentally became the discoverer of the New World. He grew up as the son of an ordinary weaver from an Italian city of Genoa. He earned money by selling sugar and drawing maps. But he dreamed of something else: he wanted to go around the Earth across the Atlantic Ocean and find a short sea route from Europe to India.

In those early days, scientists knew that the plan was complete nonsense. Columbus greatly understated the size of the Earth. His plan to reach India made royal advisors smile. They called the navigator crazy. But Columbus believed that the way to India would take a few days. Queen Isabella of Spain and her husband became interested in the project being deceived by promised wealth. In addition, they hoped to turn savage people of India into Christianity. The royal family gave Columbus the title of Admiral of the Seas and granted him three small ships.

On August 3, 1492 Columbus sailed the Atlantic. Many sailors were afraid of traveling, because they believed that the Earth was flat, and were afraid to fall off its edge. After 10 weeks of sailing in a boundless ocean a sailor saw the land. But it was not India, as Columbus thought; it was the Bahamas near the new continent – America.

After landing on the ground, no gold was found. Holds of Spanish ships were empty. Then Columbus became a cruel tyrant. A year later, he again sailed to America on 17 ships taking with him 1,200 peasants, artisans and armed soldiers for plunder and capture of prisoners.

The island of Hispaniola (today Haiti) was the first to experience the ruthless of the conqueror. The Spaniards killed children and dealt harshly with the natives, who could not bring a lot of gold.

During the third expedition to the shores of America, Columbus was arrested on the denunciation of enemies. Soon, he was acquitted and made another journey to a new continent. But his fame has faded. Six years later, Columbus died alone. A new continent was named not in honor of Columbus, but in honor of Amerigo Vespucci, who guessed that it was not India, but an unknown land.

Travels of Columbus changed world history, but for American Indians it was the time of suffering.
