Summary of the Tragedy of Hamlet

Hamlet is the tragedy written by William Shakespeare, which consists of five acts. This is one of the most famous works of Shakespeare, and one of the most famous plays in world drama. It is Shakespeare’s longest play – it has 4,042 lines and 29,551 words.

The tragedy is based on the legend of the Danish ruler named Amletus, written by the Danish chronicler Saxo Grammaticus in the third book of the Acts of the Danes and is devoted primarily to revenge, when the main character seeks revenge the death of his father.

As the researchers believe, the plot of Shakespeare’s play is taken from an unpreserved play by Thomas Kyd, the author of the play The Spanish Tragedy. The last work could have an impact on the work of Shakespeare, but it is believed that both could be based on an earlier work.

The most likely date of the work and its first performance is 1600–1601. The first actor of Hamlet was Richard Burbage; Shakespeare played the ghost of Hamlet’s father.

Near Elsinore, the Danish royal palace of monarchs, soldiers have seen a ghost for several times, surprisingly similar to the recently deceased King. The news comes to the Danish prince Hamlet, and he decides to see a ghost.

The meeting with a ghost horrifies Hamlet, completely confusing him – the ghost tells Hamlet that his uncle, the current king, killed him, and his son has to revenge.

Hamlet is amazed and confused to such an extent that the court decided he has gone mad then Hamlet decides to pretend to be mad. He tries to get the evidence of guilt of Claudius. The king, realizing that Hamlet is not crazy, and pretends for some reason, sends to him his friends – Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to find out what is really in the mind of Hamlet. But Hamlet, realized the true purpose of their visit, did not reveal anything to them, answering with pointless monologues.

At this time a group of wandering actors comes in Elsinore. Hamlet asks it to stage the play Murder of Gonzaga by inserting in the play a few lines of his own. Thus Murder Gonzaga would portray the murder of the former king. King closely follows the action and goes away after a murder in the play. Then Hamlet goes to the Queen’s chambers, killing a royal adviser Polonius hiding behind a curtain, thinking that he was Claudius. Then he talks to his mother, telling her that marrying Claudius she insulted her ex-husband. The king, realizing that Hamlet is dangerous for him, sends him to England to be immediately executed upon arrival. Prince avoids this fate and returns to Denmark. Uncle resorts to poison. Hamlet dies, but before his death he kills the king.
