Hamlet and Laertes Impulsive and Rash Behavior

The story of Hamlet relates it with the British tradition of the revenge. Shakespeare interpreted the motive of revenge in an innovative way. This is one of the major motives in the tragedy.

When considering revenge as one of the main motives of the tragedy, the researchers compare the reaction of Hamlet and Laertes to certain events, especially since both characters are placed in a similar situation: both of them have their fathers murdered, and therefore, it is necessary in accordance with the concepts of the era to solve the question of retribution for their deeds.

If Hamlet, suspecting the involvement of the king to the death of his father, nevertheless considers it necessary to collect irrefutable evidence of his guilt, Laertes is completely devoid of reflections: he appears in Elsinore with the idea that he must punish Claudius.

Prince, even after getting evidence to his suspicions, is not in a hurry with the punishment. Laertes on the other hand looks impatient – he does not want to wait and seeks to deliver justice in accordance with equal retribution.

In preparation for the fight with the prince, Laertes goes bypassing the rules of fair and open fight. At the same time, when facing the death, the son of Polonius is full of remorse. Hamlet, who stands on the verge of death himself, forgives his opponent.

Laertes is emotional; he is in captivity of his passions, which lead to his death. In order to better understand the image of Laertes it is necessary to analyze his relationships with Hamlet. The fate of these characters is firmly bound. They are about the same age. Both have spent some time outside Denmark. However, when Hamlet in was studying philosophers and thinking on the question of whether to be or not to be, Laertes in France led a different life, looking for adventure.

There are two collisions between Laertes and Hamlet The first one took place at the time of the burial of Ophelia, when young people were arguing over whose love for Ophelia was stronger. This argument can only be justified by psychological stress of both characters.

Laertes’s father death, insanity, and then death of his sisters greatly affected Laertes. Events that took place in a short period of time in his life destroyed the usual order and the initial conception of law and justice. Hamlet sees Laertes as his double, but Laertes sees Hamlet as a destructive force that destroyed his family. Laertes did not hear the words of Hamlet about making peace otherwise he would have to admit that he’d carry out an attempt on the life of his brother. Laertes however had the courage to tell Hamlet about the plot of the King.
