Abortion and Buddhism

The subject of abortion is not new to the society, but it still seems quite hard to solve. Basically, people need some fresh view, and Buddhism may help them find an effective solution. The most important thing is that this religion thinks that abortion is taking a human life, but it’s reluctant to intervene in the personal decision of women to terminate their pregnancy. This religion discourages both abortion and imposing quite rigid moral absolutes.

This is what seems a bit contradictory to many people because they think that everything that is morally wrong must be banned. However, Buddhists think that this is not what makes the society moral because it often sets new moral wrongs. What about women’s rights? Their view on this subject doesn’t include any set of rights, and the main reason is that Buddhism is quite an old religion while the concept of different human rights is quite new.

There are different things that should be learned and read about this religion to get a better understanding of its view on abortion. For example, there are some schools that distinct plant and animal lives, while others don’t, but they all agree that the termination of any pregnancy is a serious subject because it’s taking a human life. No need to say that Buddhism strongly discourages women from taking this step without forbidding it because they are free to do what they want.

Another important thing that you should understand is that this religion teaches everyone not to impose personal views on other people while learning how to have enough compassion for those who are challenged with quite complicated situations. Nowadays, there are some Buddhist countries, including Thailand, which have legal restrictions in terms of abortion, but many Buddhist believe that the state can’t intervene in the matters of their conscience.

When it comes to abortion, people tend to dismiss the concerns and worries of other sides. There are many anti-abortion books that portray it as being thoughtless and selfish, but they fail to realize the problems connected with unwanted pregnancies. Although Buddhists discourage it, there are different examples that prove that criminalizing abortion results in a lot of suffering. Everything happens in unsafe and unsterile conditions so that women risk their lives and health while doing illegal abortion. There should be some balance to protect each party involved without overdoing.

The subject of abortion is not new to the society, but it still seems quite hard to solve. Basically, people need some fresh view, and Buddhism may help them find an effective solution.
