Why People Obey the Law

What makes people obey the law? Do moral norms make us obey the law? Or are the laws reflections of moral norms? So if we behave morally, then we automatically obey the law.

Ancient Greek philosopher Plato in his dialogue Creighton talks about how Socrates was taken into custody and was awaiting execution for questions to the Greek gods. His friend, Crito visited Socrates with the aim to persuade him to escape. After the exchange of replicas Socrates said that he couldn’t escape because he violated the laws the laws of the Athenians, and he needs to be punished. That is, if a citizen decides to live in some place that has its own government and laws, he or she agrees to live according to their laws. Well, if the person does not like the laws, they can leave. You benefit when other people obey the law, but others also benefit, if you obey the law. If you have freed yourself from the laws that are still complied by the others, your profit from the laws is unfair and wrong.

Many philosophers have deduced these arguments, which are reduced to reciprocity – citizens owe either government or fellow citizens for the benefits derived from the laws. But these arguments are very critical assumptions that all laws are good laws and they bring people only benefits. Everyone benefits from the law against killing, even potential killers are protected from being killed by other murderers.

Without obeying the laws, there will be complete chaos and lawlessness in the state. The law establishes the order in society. Law is a kind of agreement that governs the relationship between people and the state. Without laws nothing relations in the society won’t be regulated and everyone will start doing whatever they like. This will lead to bad consequences.

Compliance with laws frees one from punishment. Nobody wants to willingly sit in jail or pay a huge fine. If you do not abide by the law, you will get a punishment. Therefore, in order to avoid severe punishment one needs to behave within the law.

Laws protect a man and their property. If we imagine for a moment what will happen in the country if all people will stop obey the laws, it will be terrible for their lives, for the lives of their loved ones and their property. There will be a lot of thieves, rapists, and murderers in the streets. Nobody needs anarchy.

Law-abiding citizens are protected by the state. A person, who does not violate the law, never will be punished by the state, the property won’t be arrested, and nobody will go to jail. If a person breaks the law, he or she gets the deserved attitude from the state.
