Brain-Based Learning and the Educational Setting

In accordance with the concept of modernization of education, a competence-based approach is the main took in construction of a modern lesson, which, according to studies, is a set of common principles determining the aims of education, the selection of the content of education, organization of educational process, and evaluation of educational outcomes. Among these principles are the following:

  • The purpose of education is to develop the trainees’ ability to independently solve problems in various fields and activities through the use of social experience, which is part of their own experience.
  • The meaning of the organization of the educational process is to create conditions for students to form the experience of independent solutions of cognitive, communicative, organizational, moral, and other problems that make up the content of education.

Communicative and cognitive activities are leading for the lessons and promote the formation of universal educational actions. In order to create a communicative and informative educational setting at lessons it is useful to use the strategy of brain-based learning.

Brain-based learning is modern knowledge about the structure and functions of human brain in its different conditions. This helps to use the most recent achievements of neurology and biology when formulating methodology of effective creative thinking education. In addition, it makes it possible to understand the set of reactions and behavior of the trainee.

According to the authors of the strategy of brain-based learning, it is possible to activate the brain activity in the classroom by following the didactic principles: the teacher must remember that the brain can perform several activities at the same time; information may be stored in various brain regions and can be obtained in various ways; search is the base of brain activity; emotions affect attention and memory; intellectual development is better if students interact with each other.

According to the didactic principles of brain-based learning, all the exercises in the classroom should promote the development of such analytical skills, as memorization, comprehension, application, analysis, evaluation, and creation.

Thus, the implementation of the brain-based learning strategy indicates that this technique allow to create active educational setting at the lessons, which is conducive to the formation of communicative skills and cultural thinking of students.
