Cold War and the Arms Race

The main characteristic of Cold War was the arms race between the members of the Warsaw Pact and NATO. Despite its ruinousness, it has led to significant scientific discoveries in many technological and military fields.

The concept of arms race means constant buildup of military power by opposing sides, its development not only by evolutionary, but also revolutionary ways, i.e. the creation of fundamentally new types of weapons. Some of the most revolutionary breakthroughs have been made in the field of nuclear weapons and missile technology, which led to the space race.

The start of the arms race was associated with atomic weapons. As it is known, in 1945 the United States was the only nuclear power in the world. During the war with Japan, the USA blew up atomic bombs over Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Strategic superiority has led to the fact that the US military began to build various plans for a preventive strike against the Soviet Union. But the American monopoly on nuclear weapons remained only for four years. In 1949, the Soviet Union had tried its first atomic bomb. This event was a real shock to the Western world and a major milestone of Cold War. In the course of further developments the USSR soon created nuclear and then thermonuclear weapons. Fighting has become very dangerous for everyone, and was fraught with very bad consequences. Nuclear potential accumulated over the years of Cold War was huge, but reserves of deadly weapons did not bring benefits and the costs of their production and storage grew. If a war had broken out and one of the opponents would have used nuclear weapons, pretty soon there would be nothing left not only from the opponent, but also on the entire planet.

The arms race was growing rapidly. As soon as one of the parties created any fundamentally new weapons, the opponent threw all energy and resources to achieve the same. The mad race has affected all areas of the military industry. New weapons were created in small arms, in new designs of tanks, aircraft, ships and submarines, but perhaps the most dramatic was a competition in the creation of missile technology. US overtook the USSR in the number of nuclear weapons. USSR overtook the United States in the missile technology. The Soviet Union launched the world’s first satellite, and in 1961, it was first to send a man into space. Then Americans landed on the Moon. At this point, the parties have reached strategic parity. However, arms race did not stop there. On the contrary, it spread to other industries that had at least some relation to the weapons.

The arms race was later suspended voluntarily by both parties. A number of agreements have been concluded, limiting the accumulation of weapons.
