Views on Nathaniel Branden’s A Woman’s Self-Esteem

A Woman’s Self-Esteem is an inspirational guide made to satisfy special needs of women. Nathaniel Branden based his book on the women’s intimate stories, who have struggled with problems of self-esteem. This book can be very useful for many women as it offers a step-by-step guide for women who want to transform themselves and create powerful, energized, and motivated lives.

Self-esteem is the respect (or disrespect) to the person itself, based on the objective merits and successes of the individual, or, on the contrary, due to the fault or error. Self-esteem is a model of demanding love in relation to oneself.

Branden’s book is also a guide that assists women in learning the positive influence they can make on their lives and what result their actions will have in a stronger sense of competence and self-worth. Branden said that the base of a healthy self-esteem lies on six key practices – self-acceptance, living consciously, self-responsibility, self-assertiveness, personal integrity, and purposeful living. He shows how women can build these essential properties to reach their full potential. To help women reach that, the book is filled with various creative exercises created to strengthen the personal development and reinforce self-esteem.

Self-esteem consists of two components: self-respect, the right to be happy, and self-efficacy, the ability to choose, think, learn and make appropriate decisions. Self-esteem is important to all people in order to have healthy development. If a person doesn’t have a positive self-esteem, psychological growth would be oscillates.

Branden describes a woman’s self-esteem as a building of six racks; without any of these six racks the whole building would be destroyed. These racks include the six virtues mentioned above. Each point is discussed in detail, and personal stories are presented to provide evidence of unique case studies with such topics.

In the end of each explanation of the topic, Branden gives a sentence completion exercise, where a reader needs to finish the unfinished sentence by adding an ending. This exercise is excellent in developing the thought processes and is great for revealing ideas through writing. Also the book provides special circumstances, when self-esteem plays a key role. These include the following: romantic love, a fear of selfishness, anger, jealousy, defensiveness, and anxiety of success. Each point is discussed specifically and the chapters also include case studies and sentence completion exercises.
