The Impressive Political Background of John Quincy Adams

John Quincy Adams was born on July 11, 1767 in Braintree, Massachusetts, and was the eldest son of John Adams, the second president of the United States, and his strong-willed wife Abigail.

Three important factors have defined his life: first, belonging to one of the old extremely politically influential families in New England; secondly, the culture of the region, which not only filled Adams with a keen sense of duty and high moral and Christian values; and finally, thirdly, the fact that much of his youth and the years of his studies, he spent as a politician in Europe.

At 17, he was accompanied by his father during the travels to Holland, Prussia, Russia, Denmark and England, and since 1794 as an envoy Adams represented his country in Hague. During these visits, he not only learned great knowledge in schools and universities, but also met with the European balance of forces and problems of individual households. This experience allowed him to become an astute and far-sighted American politician of foreign policy of his era. As Minister of Foreign Affairs Adams emphasized the US national independence in the international interaction of forces that are conceptually linked him to James Monroe.

Adams’s essay corresponded in its main tendencies to the position of George Washington and the Federalist Party and testified about the political ambitions of a young lawyer. Later, he accepted George Washington’s offer to represent the United States in the Netherlands. This was the start of John Quincy Adams’s career, which made him perhaps the most significant and most successful foreign policy figure in the 19th century. Before becoming the President in 1824, there were three main events in Adams’s career: concluding of peace in Ghent, which ended the Anglo-American War in 1814, transcontinental treaty with Spain in 1819, and the so-called Monroe Doctrine proclaimed in 1823.

Straightness, personal coldness, scrupulous restraint in the party-political issues and the inability to create own political entourage and strengthen political supporters: a steady adherence to the principle of absolute political independence, which in the beginning of the century gave rise to deep distrust of both Federalists and Republicans towards Adams, determined his presidential style of government and thus destroyed all the prospect of the second election. Despite the impressive political background, Adams’s political significance was not based on his presidency, but on the successes of his foreign policy, before becoming a President.

John Quincy Adams was born on July 11, 1767 in Braintree, Massachusetts, and was the eldest son of John Adams, the second president of the United States, and his strong-willed wife Abigail.
