A Marriage Proposal in Pride and Prejudice

If you are fond of Pride and Prejudice, you already know that this famous book written by Jane Austen offers a number of interesting topics. For example, Elizabeth, one of the main characters, received 2 proposals so that you should evaluate her reaction to each one. She is famous for showing her incredible pride toward Darcy because she was offended by his words when they first met. It’s true that his proud and careless comment lead to her dislike and clouded her fair judgement of his nature and character.

When others left for Rosings, she is still worried with the news that he was the main cause of the breakup of Bingley and Jane. That’s why she is so startled to see Darcy who shocked her with his declarations of love and a marriage proposal. Of course, Elizabeth feels quite flattered, but she still shows her prejudice against him, and everything becomes only worse when he starts explaining to her his reasons why he didn’t pursue his intentions earlier because they included her family problems and lower social class. She decides to refuse from his proposal because of his arrogant manner and other factors so that Darcy has to accept her accusations with no apologies.

It’s worth mentioning that Elizabeth is quite a daring, straightforward, and lively young woman, and her pride is quite evident. She definitely feels overwhelmed with her emotions and starts crying. This is when the author represents the climax of the entire plot and a turning plot of this story. Unfortunately, Darcy is more focused on his challenges and steps taken to be with her instead of his true feelings. This is how Jane Austen shows readers that both parties involved are guilty of prejudice and pride.

The other marriage proposal was made by Collings, and it was a completely different thing. He didn’t use any harsh words or insults and Elizabeth had no dislike to him. You should understand that this proposal is business-like, and she has enough strength to decline it in a kind and polite way. Collings find it hard to believe that she is sincere in her refusal, and this is what proves his lack of respect and understanding. In summary, the reactions of Elizabeth were quite different to each proposal, but they all are overwhelmed with her pride. The good news is that this story finished with a happy end so that a true love and fairness win. This means that Darcy and Elizabeth are together and find enough power to understand each other.
