Huckleberry Finn's Dramatic Foils

There are many people who agree that Huckleberry Finn is one of the best literary works of Mark Twain in many accounts. Basically, this famous novel is targeted at a range of subjects and issues that were present in the society of that time and some of them are still present these days. It’s true that the author wanted to drive his major points into the minds of his readers, and that’s why he decided to use a number of effective literary tools and methods, including a sarcastic view of emotions.

Mark Twain also uses other important devices, including displaying major characters and their traits via the specific actions of others. Keep in mind that dramatic foils are quite important in this story because they play a major role. For example, pay attention to Jim who is both a runaway slave and a moral center of the whole plot because he fills the void in the life of Huck who is left by his father. You should understand that his father mistreats his son terribly at the very beginning of this story and there are many scenes that prove it. Read a scene where he locks his son in a cabin for a few days.

Another important detail is that Jim contrasts other characters from a start because he looks out for Huck whole sharing his knowledge and life experiences and protecting him as best as he can. It’s necessary to evaluate differences in these male characters, and the good news is that they are illustrated by the author in different interactions with Huck. His father is quite intoxicated and starts hallucinating while chasing Huck in a small cabin. However, Jim risks his freedom and life on a range of occasions for his sake. Another clear example that proves this statement is that he could leave Huck any time, but he decided to remain with this boy.

When his father is disposed of, Jim is the one who is left without any foil, but the author solves this problem by introducing the targeted audience to those swindlers who are referred as royalty. When it comes to a dramatic foil between Tom and Huck, it continues in this famous book too. It’s not a secret that Huck leads a hard life because he has no caring father who is abusive in many ways, such as physical and mental. Tom also has a bit troublesome life because he has no real home, and this means that their characters are quite similar at the beginning of this story. So, there are many examples of dramatic foils used by Mark Twain in this novel, and readers need to explore them all.

There are many people who agree that Huckleberry Finn is one of the best literary works of Mark Twain in many accounts. Basically, this famous novel is targeted at a range of subjects and issues that were present in the society of that time and some of them are still present these days.
