Guy De Maupassant’s Old Milon

Guy de Maupassant is the most famous French novelist, the master of the story with an unexpected ending. In the period of nine years, he published no less than 20 collections of short stories that in many ways close to naturalism.

According to his initial positions Maupassant was a materialist, a thoughtful observer of the natural laws of the objective world, devoid of any kind of religious illusions. He did not believe in the supernatural and was deeply convinced of the complete disappearance of everything departing after death. In many works Maupassant asserted the legitimacy of natural feelings and invincible power of love and showed remarkable harmony, diffuse in nature.

At the same time, while observing the customs of his contemporaries, Maupassant was disgusted with proprietary marks and acquisitive instincts, penetrated into all the pores of bourgeois society that seized the most diverse social strata and mutilated family life and relationships among people.

In the political life of France Maupassant indignantly watched the pictures of war. His increased sensitivity to the sufferings of others, in particular, during the Prussian invasion of 1870, is convincingly told by his faithful servant – Francois Tassar in the second book of his memoirs. Not only the Franco-Prussian War and arrogance and cruelty of Prussian winners worried Maupassant, but also fear and servility of the French inhabitants, trembling for their life and good, as well as violence and murder simple and courageous people were forced to do like Uncle Milon in a novella Old Milon.

In the novella, Maupassant purposely emphasizes an ordinary peasant appearance of his character. His behavior is also typical to an old farmer. Being a true hero, he alone, without any help and without pompous phrases, destroyed sixteen enemy officers and soldiers, revenging for his murdered son and desecrated land. When the Prussians captured him and brought in for questioning, he was afraid only for a minute. But after recovering from the embarrassment, he clearly and fearlessly expressed in the face of the invaders his simple and true patriotism.

The scene of a peaceful Norman spring that opens the novel Old Milon is not just intonation, but also philosophical conclusion of the e story: life goes on as usual, the sun pours on the field its burning flame, apple trees are blooming in the garden of the farm, the Prussians are nowhere to be seen, and a peasant family gathers for lunch. Only the vine, planted on the spot where the Old Milon was shot is reminiscent of the terrible drama that was played out once and may at any time happen again in this, seemingly a peaceful environment.
